The Mercedes AMG GT is a two-seater sport car and was first unveiled during the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The design was created to replace the SLS AMG. The car had some interesting and one-of-a-kind features. For starters, it is the first model to incorporate the new twin turbo, 4.0 liter V-8 engine.
The GT-R’s first public appearance happened this last weekend at the U.K.'s Goodwood Festival of Speed. In the words of CEO of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, "With the new AMG GT R, we have reached the next level of driving performance. This road-going sports car with motor-racing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an ultimate driving experience that allows people to feel our motorsport origins in every fiber. It combines the driving dynamics of our AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT.”
The GT-R uses the same twin turbo, 4.0-liter, V-8 engine as the other GTs. This is the third generation of GT cars from Mercedes. The GT-R has better performance and greater horsepower than its predecessors. This extra power (577 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque) comes from some modified software, redesigned exhaust ports, new turbos, and a unique compression ratio. All this power is delivered through a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle.
More powerful and with better aerodynamics, the GT-R has some competition for the GT3 RS from Porsche and the Corvette Z06.
There were some modifications made to the suspension of the GT-R as well. The track is wider and has new suspension components. It features a coil-over suspension with dampers that can be adapted to be set in sport mode.
The GT-R has rear-wheel steering. Up to 62 mph, the rear wheels will turn to the opposite angle of the front wheels to obtain a faster response in closed corners.
The light weight of the GT-R is contributed by carbon-ceramic brakes and a cross-diagonal carbon-fiber brace under the body. The torque tube is 40% lighter than that on the AMG GT S.
